Bought this at full price (...) from a local store based on Krups name. It does not toast evenly (unless you toast in two stages and turn and flip over the bread). It's very slow. And, this is the best part - when toasting one slice, sometimes it can launch the toast out of the toaster - usually landing in the sink. My mom's 30 year old cheap-o Toastmaster works a lot better.

When the toaster was new, I'd give it 4 stars. Unlike some of the other reviewers, we found it toasted fairly evenly. However, if I'm spending $80 on a toaster, I'd expect it to last. Since it's been two years since we got the toaster and now it only lightly browns toast on its highest & longest setting, it's time to shop for a new toaster. We WON'T be buying Krups again.

We wanted a toaster that would last. We paid extra for the Krups Sensotoast Compact (two slice) but, it didn't last any longer than cheap ones.
We were not happy with performance either - I don't know that it ever toasted evenly (hmmm, ... maybe when it was brand new it did)

Expensive, uneven toasting during its short life-- 20 months, just out of the 18 month warrenty. Our previous GE toaster was still useful after 22 years.
We junked it and bought a new Toastmaster for less than the repair would have cost. The Toastmaster is clearly superior, but not great.
Regarding the Jaguar-Lucas comment. Right on!! We owned an XKE with Lucas electronics. Krups may be worse.

Someone earlier compared this product to a Jaguar, and I would agree - a Jaguar from the '60's with Lucas wiring harness. Mine looks great; used gently and with terrific results for about two years, then suddenly - no heat. Krups repair took about five weeks, and it was as wonderful as the day it was purchased. Today, after similar gentle use six months after the repair - same symptoms. It will not see the inside of the shop again. It is destined for the crusher. I'm pleased, at least, that I acquired it on sale for less than $25 as a loss leader. The repair also cost $25.

Toast from the [inexpensive] toasters are more evenly toasted and more accurately toasted. Huge disappointment because we thought Krups would do better than this!!

I purchased this toaster from an online appliance dealer in November of 2002 for aproximately $50.00. I thought by purchasing a brand like Krups it would be reliable and a quality built product. Was I wrong! First of all, it toasted very unevenly. You had to keep rotating the bread or bagel and putting it back down to try to get consistant browning. Secondly the internal wires that connected to the heating elements deteriorated in 3 years. Fortunately I was able to make the repairs myself, but after splicing and resplicing the same connection, the wire just kept getting shorter. Krups refused to sell me the parts to make the necessary repairs, so I had to improvise and use what I had available in my workshop. Krups suggested I send a toaster to an authorized service center. Why should I have to pay to ship it and have it serviced due to the poor quality materials used in the manufacturing process. Shouldn't a toaster last more than 3 years. My parents had a Sunbeam that lasted over 30 years. They sure don't make things the way the use to. I shall never buy another Krups product again, and I recommend this anyone considering a small appliance.

Once you know how to fix it, it's a great toaster. It's been very reliable, if you don't count the element wires burning out every year or so. The first one we had lasted two years; we loved it so much, and other replacement toasters in its class are so expensive, I opted to buy another one used on Amazon. It broke too, so then it's time to roll up the sleeve, go in and see what's the problem.

the element wires burn out; simple problem. Just go to the hardware store and get some bigger guage wire, and some crimp connectors (find steel connectors, and properly insulated wire) and fix it yourself.

Nice toaster, easy to fix, works great, great form factor. Worth learning how to fix yourself...

Rec'd one as a gift in Dec 04. The large, long slots are perfect for bagels or sourdough bread slices normally too large for others. The crumb tray is easy to use. It's sleek, simple, easy to clean and toasts beatifully...UNTIL...yesterday morning when the bread popped up looking just as it went down. So, I tried it again and stood there and peered in. No heating, no sound - no toasting. No flashes or pops, but there is a burn spot that suggests that a crumb may have come between a heating rod and the interior metal construction. So perhaps it shorted out. Krups customer service said they had never heard of this model failing suddenly - and no, they could not sell me parts for it - but they did suggest where I could buy a new one! Locally, it can't be fixed for less than the cost of 3 new ones.

So, if you get one, this may be the only time in history I can suggest buying the extended warranty to go with, as long as it will replace it more than just once, for years to come.

We have had this toaster oven for more than a year (but less than two years)and now have really become disappointed in its quality and the poor product support coming from KRUPS. This is really too bad, as we have several other KRUPS kitchen appliances that we also use frequently and love, among them an Espresso Machine (our second one as we wore out the first one after four or five years) and a Coffee Bean Grinder.

The overall product functions and performance of this toaster/oven are outstanding, yet the simple things, namely all of the plastic membranes over the control buttons have cracked! We have a Toshiba Microwave in our kitchen that is 17 years old with plastic membranes over its control buttons and they are still in near original condition...I'm not even sure whether this might be a safety issue since moisture and liquids can now get into the controls. (As a much more minor negative on this product, we also noticed right after buying the oven that the LED display fogs up a bit when you toast anything with some moisture in it - we actually took back our first KRUPS oven believing this was a product defect but found it occurred on the replacement oven and have just lived with that quirk).

To make things even worse, we have now been told by Krups (both their North American headquarters and their closest authorized service (in San Francisco) that KRUPS offers no parts for repairing this toaster and that our best plan should be to buy a new one. We are stunned. This product has seen only typical household use by two adults and we paid three to four times more for a KRUPS product than other similar toaster/ovens because we believed in the KRUPS brand.

I got this toaster at the recommendation of Alton Brown's book. I like real bread, not that gummi-america crap, so the long slots were a definite plus, but I have found the toaster to be too hot. several times now i have gone to the toaster after the cycle and found the edges of the toast burnt and smoke in the air. don't think I would buy it again or recommend it.
