I have 4 Honeywell HEPA filters: 40100 (tiny and very loud), 13520 (big, loud, strong wind), 17200 (small, quiet), and 18150. #18150 seems to be the quietest of the bunch, although it's hard to compare to the 17200, because the the two devices's noises are louder at different pitches (17200 is higher-pitched). 18150 works great. The advantage of 17200, besides being quiet, is that it blows the filtered air straight up, which sometimes is exactly what you want. 18150 is ideal to place at an entry-point for polluted air, or just anywhere to filter the air in a room.

In my opinion, Honeywell's carbon-HEPA combination may be safer than electrostatic filters (which create some ozone), ozone generators, and ionizers.

I bought my unit at an Asian grocery called "99 Ranch", which had a very good price. The unit had notable defects (sometimes stopped boiling far before the boiling point; sometimes got an air bubble and couldn't keep pumping the water out), and it did NOT have a "lock/unlock" safety button although one was depicted in the manual. When it did work, it was very handy. It stopped working entirely after just two weeks -- no heat, no pump, no lights.

I called the phone number printed right on the back on the machine, and the very courteous man on the phone immediately offered to send me a whole new one at their expense, and even pay for the return shipping on this one. The new one arrived promptly, but has already proven to have at least one defect (a loose hinge part).

It seems like you get a lot for your money, but the quality reminds me of General Motors circa 1975. Needs improvement.

Gotta love an appliance that lets you have hot water without waiting (most of the time). It is very easy to use and very easy to clean, and we use it constantly. One major drawback is that it takes over 20 minutes to boil a full 3 liters, but once it's boiled and hot, it's sooooooooo convenient. We use it not only for tea and instant hot drinks, but also as starter water for cooking and steaming vegetables, and for old-fashioned fresh brewed coffee (instead of having to watch the percolator on the stove for 15 minutes or more, the water begins to percolate in under 2 minutes).

My unit arrived slightly dented on the side. Don't know if that's why it's such a bargain (most similar units run at least $75).

I had high hopes, mine worked for 2 months. Long story short, DEAD. Customer Service was NO help at all. POS

I didn't want to believe the bad reviews. So I spent. And now I've lost. After the first few days the LCD stopped showing the complete read out. No biggie, I thought. Then it wouldn't turn on at all. The LCD would show that it was on, but nothing was happening. Then I boxed it up to ship off for repairs. By the way, you pay for shipping both ways, and it's not light.

After it sat by the door for a few days I double checked just to see if maybe it had been a brown out. Some appliances won't turn on if there's not enough power to them. Lo and behold it turned on. So back out of the box it came. I used it that evening. Then tried again the next day. Nope.

The electronics just aren't up to snuff. This is a fickle machine and certainly not worth $99. Oh, and JR doesn't like returns. Apparently through Amazon they'll give you 30 days, but if you buy from the store it's just 14!!!

Don't buy this. If you do, your only option is to burn incense, sacrifice animals, and beg on your knees.

I bought a like-new BAP1175 return from Goodwill, for $2.00. It too would not start up. After I looked at it for few moments, I found that a small plastic tab on the upper inside edge of the front door panel had broken off. The tab enables the machine to shut off when the door is opened and allows it run when the door is closed. I replaced the tab with a small screw and used a hot glue gun to make sure the screw did not turn out. The machine has been running for days now with no trouble. Just a thought for those whose machines have stopped running for no reason.

I bought two 60001s to replace a HEPA air filter because replacement elements were difficult to find. I've been running these two non-stop for over a month and they never reduced allergy attacks on sunny, windy days. I took out the electrostatic filters for cleaning but they're still clean. On the other hand, the fan blades and air exit screen are covered with dark grey dust. The IFD filter in these does not work at all.

The main reason that I bought this unit is because it has a permanent filter. It's advertised as being easy to clean. That's because it never gets dirty! The permanent filter doesn't pick up anything. It's supposed to give particles an electrical charge so that they'll stick to the filter but it doesn't seem to happen. Honeywell has discontinued this model (60001) and the smaller one (60000) and apparently has given up on the whole technology they use and gone back to units with replaceable filters.

I suffer from Spring/Summer allergies with sensitivity to other indoor irritants for many years. I have tired other models of air cleaners which I have found to help.

This unit does the job. You don't have to buy very expensive HEPA filter replacements and at its quietest setting you can leave it running in the room where you sleep with the door closed. It will make it possible to get through allergy season without being totally wiped out.

I would like to remark about some of the negative reviews of this device.

1. It is not a house cleaner and does not have a charcoal filter in it. It cannot make a household that has continuous heavy smoking smell all clean and fresh. It is not designed to make up for lack of housecleaning such as vacuuming rugs.

2. The particles that cause irritation are not easily seen with the naked eye. If this unit is operated for a reasonable amount of time the pre-filter will catch the bigger
pieces of airborne junk such as shredded skin particles - the major component of what people call "dust".
The permanent filter will catch the smaller stuff. If you gently knock the permanent filter on a piece of paper this dirt will show. Use a vacuum to clean it out completely.

3. No, this unit does not generate a great deal of ozone and doesn't smell bad when you take it out of the box. Some people's respiratory systems are so sensitive that they react to any amount. Examine the effects of a real ozone generator and compare. The electrostatic mechanism in this air cleaner doesn't even come close. Doing what is necessary to build up your health will reduce the sensitivity.

4. If there is indeed defective units out there shame on Honeywell. That doesn't mean a properly operating unit shouldn't be obtained and given a chance.
