The unit significantly reduced dust and dander in the room. The first filter lasted about three months, which is good considering the amount of crud that it had to filter from the air. The noise level is acceptable. It's not silent, but it's not like a hair dryer either. I keep it on a medium setting with the oscillator on, and the noise level is comparable to a desk fan. Overall, I wish I had bought it sooner, as my husbands allergies are greatly improved while he sleeps at night, thanks to this air cleaner.

Also, one thing to remember with the ionizing units like Sharper Image or Oreck, is that they create ozone as a byproduct of ionization. Ozone buildup in a room can be toxic. Additionally, they are silent because there is no fan. Having no fan means the air doesn't get circulated, so the air immediately surrounding the unit is clean, but the rest of the room is not.

This is so much better than my sharper image that I paid $[...] for it really helped my allergies and makes my room smell like a hotel room, clean. Also with the sharper image you constantly have to clean the grids and that is just a pain in the neck. I would rather pay for the luxury of not cleaning the grids of the two expensive sharper image air purifiers that I own and go by replaceable filters. This machine is a little loud but if you dont mind white noise while you sleep this machine is for you.

This air cleaner works great as long as you read and follow the instructions when initially setting it up (as in, make sure you remove the plastic from the air filters before trying to use it).

I have terrible allergies. I've had to go to the ER more than once because of them. I was breathing much easier the very day my Bionaire came, though. My only issue is that it isn't quite as quiet as I was led to believe, but it isn't too noisy on the low setting. Besides, I'd rather have a little extra white noise in the background than keep wheezing.

For the price, I think this unit would be hard to beat.

I bought this air purifier for my 9' x 10' office. I leave it running in quiet mode 24/7, and it has substantially reduced the amount of dust in my office. Ordinarily a layer of dust would accumulate over a weekend, but with this purifier there is none.

This unit is actually quiet in "quiet mode"--it is unobtrusive in my office, and I believe that I would have no problem sleeping with this on at home. The middle and high fan settings, however, are intolerable. I only use these settings when I'm away from the office for lunch etc. for some extra cleaning while I'm out.

I'm not sure what those expensive air purifiers do that this one does not--I mean, they're all just a fan and a filter, right? Overall, I'm pleased with this purcase.

Update March 2006: still running quietly 24/7 in quiet mode; still very little dust accumulating in my office, filter does not need to be replaced yet. I'm still pleased with this purchase.

This little unit works well. I had a cat "accident" in a very cramped area in my basement that ended up causing a very nasty smell in our basement and part of our house upstairs. We put it near the location of the "accident" and ran it on the "quick clean" mode for a few hours and then in standard mode the rest of that day and the following day. The smell diminished substantially over that time. Operates fairly quietly. Only complaint is cost of filter refills (are they really worth 8 bucks?).

After reading all other reviews I thought that this product would work well and for only $20. I tested it while cooking a Mexican dish and it did better than expected. Clearly it did not get rid of all the garlic, onion and chili oddors, but it did reduced the smells a lot. I liked it a lot. In fact I will buy another one for the bathroom.

I just recently received this odor eliminator. It was much bigger than I expected but very easy to setup and use. The filters are relatively cheap and only need to be purchased every 2 months.

On whisper quiet mode well the unit is just about whisper quiet. If you are trying to get rid of a particularly bad smell you can turn it on high speed which is a moderately noisy fan noise.

Living in a dorm sometimes things can get a bit smelly (if you know what I mean).This device always has your back whether it's your garbage you don't want to take out or your room mate's pile of smelly clothes. In this modern age we don't always have time to take care of these things and most sprays simply mask odors. This great Hamilton Beach product ELIMINATES odors and sends them packing.

It is the best cooler you can ever buy and it cleans the air.You can get a better cooler than this it is just that good. But be sure you buy is from amazon new or used because if you buy it some where else you probably won't get the same results. I got mine used just to save money and it works great.You should realy get.

My husband suffers from environmental (and food) allergies. It has been quite a process to indentify all of the myriad allergen sources and eliminate them. I am not by nature a clean freak so when we realized he had dust-mite allergies, I was depressed. Since he has the allergies, he can't do the cleaning (and I _am_ the one who is home full-time.) So it fell to me. Uughh!

The thing is though, whenever I sweep, all of that dust gets kicked up into the air which makes the situation temporarily worse. (I know because my HB Air Purifier tells me so on its air quality monitor!) So I crank up the purifier to high speed whenever I sweep or dust or move the area rugs to shake them out outside. As a bonus, keeping the air purifier running means that there is less dust floating in the air and settling on the furniture which means less dusting for me!

Also, we have two small children. They get pretty excited when Daddy gets home and there is a lot of running and jumping and wrestling. That kicks up a lot of dust! If we don't keep the air purifier running, my husband is stuffed up and sneezing within minutes. With this air purifier, they're having a lot more fun! I've noticed that my one year old is less congested now too.

FYI, we also but allergen barriers on all of our beds and pillows. We replaced our traditional sofa with a futon with an allergy barrier and fitted cover that gets washed every two weeks. And we will _never_ live in a home with either carpeting or forced-hot-air heating again! But we bought the air purifier before we made those other changes and I credit it with at least half of the improvement.

Anyway, I did a lot of research before I bought this unit. We have owned it for about four months and I am 100% satisfied. I came online to buy new filters. We do rinse the prefilter regularly and that also seems to make a big difference.

I, too, have noticed that the air quality gets worse when I'm cooking- especially if it's something greasy.

After researching several air purifiers, I found a recommendation for this one at Allergybuyersclub.com. Since it was relatively inexpensive, I decided to try it. Wow, am I impressed! I set it up in my bedroom. It did smell of plastic for a few hours, but by morning the smell was gone. But the important thing was that for the first time in months, I woke up without a stuffy nose or any wheezing. The very first night, it made a tremendous difference! And it has several nice features, like the air quality testing, and a way to test the efficiency of the HEPA filter. I love this purifier so much, I bought another one for the living room. Highly recommended!

I love this Purifier! Especially cool is the auto speed setting which reads the air quality of the room, and adjust the speed of the fan accordingly. Sometimes when I'm cooking something that has a lot of aroma, it whips into high speed.
It's a large cleaner, but not too large that you can't move it from room to room.
I leave it running in my Bedroom at night, and the white noise is perfect for deep sleep. You won't find a similar cleaner even close to the price of this one. An awesome buy!

Despite what the other reviewer has said this unit does NOT have a "powerful fan", even at its highest setting it's only comprable to the lowest setting of your average box fan. The cooling part is an absolute joke. I mean sure, it'll pump out some cold air...at first. But after about 20 minutes it'll cause the humidity in the room to rise so high that it no longer works (cause swamp coolers don't work in high humidity). I suppose you could buy a couple of dehumidifiers and that might help to curb the problem...but I'm not going to waste any more money on this thing, I'm just gonna go buy a vertical swamp cooler to put in my window (which will put out a LOT of cold air, don't saturate the air with moisture and best of all you don't need to fill the freakin thing up with ice and cold water every other day or so).

I bought this unit to help cool my 12x8 office. Due to some crazy building mismanagement, during the colder months of the year, my office gets crazy hot, up to 82 some times.

After 2 days of using this thing, I would say that it's definitely not a miracle cure. The products claims of dropping the temperature 8-12 degrees is overly optimistic. I'd say I'm getting a maximum of about 5 degrees, but every little bit helps.

Has a nice powerful fan though. Is a bit larger than I thought it would be.
