For the asking price (refurbs are even cheaper,) this is far and away the best value in an ionic air purifier. It quietly spews out a great many negative ions, which attach to suspended particulates like dust and pollen, causing them to drop to the floor or stick to the electrostatically-charged collection plates in the front of the unit. Although completely silent, it is evident that it's working as soon as you turn the unit on. A gentle draft emanates from the front grill, accompanied by the refreshing scent of ozone, a pleasant sensation not unlike being next to a waterfall. As their website claims, negatively ionized air does make you feel good in addition to it's air cleaning properties. Electricity consumption is just about nil.

Although they mean nothing to me, there are perhaps two minor drawbacks to the XJ2000. One is that the fit and finish may not be up to the standards of the Sharper Image crowd. I don't mind because the lack of moving parts and simple construction suggest that it isn't going to fail for a long time. And if it does die on you, there's a three year manufacturer warrantee, but I wouldn't sweat it. The other drawback is the absolute necessity that you clean off the collection plates and emitter needles. This requires that you unscrew two fasteners on the bottom of the unit, wipe down the plates with a moist cloth, and swab the needles with rubbing alcohol to get rid of any deposits. You'll know it's time to clean when it starts to make a soft buzzing sound. Other than these two considerations, no downside to speak of.

In conclusion, I think the manufacturer has really hit the nail on the head with their line of simple, unobtrusive ionic air purifiers. Just buy it.

Up here in the deep north it is essential to have humidifier if you have musical instruments, or anything made out of nice wood. I have tried several different options, and evaporative humidifiers are the best. This one has enough nice features to warrent an excellent rating. The main great feature is that it is easy to add water to the system. The tanks remove easily, and can be filled from the kitchen sink (they are too tall for filling in a bathroom sink). In the dead of winter expect to fill it daily, but fortunately this is big enough to only need filling once per day. Other nice features include a fan speed control (pump humidity in fast because you were gone all weekend and its dry), or quiet. At low speed settings you barely know its on. I also like the optional air cleaning evaporator. It apparently slows down air flow, but that seems trivial since the fan can simply be turned up.

We use ours in our finch room. These little birds can create quite a smell and this model did WONDERS to clear that up. They also seemed healthier and I suspect that the UV light had something to do with that. After about 6 months we started to get fan squeak at lower speeds and this gradually got worse over the next 12 months at which time the motor just died. I couldn't find my receipt so I threw it out. Admittedly I found a great deal on one on clearance at Canadian Tire and bought another one. I'm hoping the first one was a fluke.

Agree with other commenters that it's
moderately noisy, but it's a calming
kind of noise, good for background.

Also agree that the control knob is
a very bad design, impossible to grip.
I wrapped it with many layers
of duct tape to make it usable.

I purchased this Air Purifier for my Mom who suffers from COPD after her apartment building experienced some floading. Her bedroom carpet was saturated, quickly lifted and dryed but she had difficulty breathing, shortness of breath etc (mold and mildew?). After purchasing this air purifier she experienced dramatic results within 2 days. She uses it daily and has no breathing problems when the unit is used. I have strongly recommended this to many people and am waiting for new stock to arrive so that I can purchase one for myself. I especially like the 3 stage filtration and the reasonable cost of replacement filters.
