Dirty Dust Cup and Loud
Third Time's a LOT of Crumbs!I bought this vacuum after a series of decidedly poor vacuums, thinking that (being a college student, this was expensive!) a little bit more money might yield better results.
The first two run-throughs, this worked incredibly - I'd never seen such sucking power! The swivel was mighty, the light on the front was a big improvement on my old vacuum, and the thing picked up everything in sight in one fell swoop (no running over a spot again and again).
Then, the third time, there were rubbery odors, my cat's hair remained permanently pressed into the rug, and a simple bit of confetti was not even touched when I ran over it.
Upon opening the vacuum, the belt was absolutely CHARRED! I'm going to try replacing the belt and see how long it lasts, but I fear (after reading other reviews of this item) that I'm going to be in the market for another vacuum...AGAIN! Sending the thing back to Dirt Devil would cost me more than it's worth...
NEVER buy anything like this without reading online reviews first (stupid me in the cleaning aisle at Target)!

Works great at first, then turns into a nightmare!I bought this vac a year ago and it worked great at first, picking up all the stuff you see on those vaccum commercials (big paper clips, staples etc.). About two months ago this thing went way downhill in terms of performance. It would pick things up but they wouldn't go into the canister, everything just got stuck in the hose. I would then have to shake the hose out on to the floor, somewhat defeating the purpose of vaccuming, and pick up the big clumps of dirt that had formed in the hose with my hands. Today when I started vaccuming it spit out pieces of dirt from the last time I vacced on to the floor which I then had to vac up again. Think it's time I put this thing, and myself, out of misery.

Its super efficient and versatile for a variety of floorsWe have have mostly wood floors and some rugs with one carpeted room. I love it because of its versatility and how much it picks up for being such a lighter weight vacuum. The attached hose makes quick cleaning of corners and upholstery. Its super efficient and saves me time because of its innovative features. Plus, aethestically, its a good-looking vacuum.

Best part - it is light!I love the weight of this vacuum, but I miss the suction, and all-in-one functionality of my last vacuum. I am so underwhelmed by this expensive machine. I wish I had returned it within the 30 days.
It is loud, and it smells dusty... I passed on the air freshner tablets. That should have been a flag.
The hand-held unit is overvalued too. Spend the extra $$ and chose the one that has tool storage option.
Is is light... If that isn't important, skip this choice.
all in all - keep looking.

Oreck is a LightweightI was able to obtain a lightly used Oreck XL at no cost. The vacuum needed to be cleaned up so I stripped it down to its essential parts and did a complete cleanup. The tube from the impeller to the bag was packed solid with debris. I reassembled it into "like-new" condition. I flipped the switch and the machine ran as smoothly as a kitten, well not quite, more like an angry lion. Man, this baby is noisy!
By far the best feature about this vacuum is its light weight otherwise it is noisy and the build quality is no higher than fair. Remember, I had it all apart. It simply costs way too much for what you get.

do NOT buy any other vacuum!I have purchased about 10 vacuums over the years, and have used many more. None even come close to the performance of the Oreck. Some reviewers said the Oreck is noisy, but it doesn't bother me. I only have to vacuum half as long, and I have used other vacuums that are just as loud. It is very lightweight, which makes it much less backbreaking to lug around. You know when to change the bag, because you notice the weight of the full bag! I also like a machine with a bag, because I hate the dust and mess that come out of a bagless machine when it is time to empty it. The main thing I am looking for in a vacuum is how well it cleans. I have two long-haired dogs who shed really badly, as well as four canaries who throw seed all over the place. Before I got the Oreck, I worked really hard get this out of the carpet. Now I just vacuum it up, with no extra effort. I only go over a given area once. Yes, it does try to eat throw rugs, but what does that say about a vacuum that doesn't? It must not be sucking up the dirt either!

Great PurchaseThis vaccum is great. I was worried about the bag/filter light to see if the bag would really be full before it came on and low and behold the bag was stuffed when the light came on. I have not had any problems and would recommend this vaccum to anyone. It works great on picking up dog hair from the carpet and bare floors.

Just about took an axe to this vacuumI came to Amazon to find reviews of vacuums, after desperately trying to get the dirt recepticle out of this vacuum ONE MORE TIME. I've had Hoover bagless vacuums before. This one is horrible. It sucks only fair-to-midlin' on bare floors. It sucks only fair-to-midlin' on heavy rugs. It sucks big time in the general usability factor. It's way too heavy.
Oh, I have to pray to the vacuum gods that the dirt recepticle will come out without benefit of power tools. And I have to empty said recepticle a lot, because the filters get plugged with pet hairs (just like the guy on the Dyson ads says) within a couple of minutes using vacuum.

Worst vacuum everI have had this vacuum for 3 years. The floor cleaning feature of it hadn't picked up any dust from day one, so I always kept in on the carpet feature, with the brush inside rolling. It was the only way it worked at all. And now I find the suction has been reduced to nearly nothing, and it started shutting off in the midst of being used, and turning back on after about 40 minutes of rest. Well, I can't give it that time. Never buying a Hoover vac again.
Hoover U8149-900 WindTuneel bagless & bagged Mine is a purple U8149 model. It is similar to the U8140. It came with a bonus set (a bagged package and an extra hose). I hope it is not as bad as the 8140.
I bought this from Fry's. I don't like bagless so I use the bonus bag set all the time. It is ok to me.
Pro
1. Powerful. There is a belt to tie the power cord of my laptop. The vaccuum took it out ! Make sure to use the lowest setting first.
2. I have 2 "very difficult to clean" carpets from IKEA. Before I bought this vacuum, I need to use tape to get the dirts off the carpet. With this vaccum, those carpets are like new now !
3. I can use it with or without the bag.
4. It has the HEPA filter.
Con:
I used it 3 times and I think I need to change the rating to 3 stars.
1. I am not sure if the carpet in my apartment is cheap or the vaccuum is too powerful. No matter which carpet depth I set, it took a lot of fabric from the carpet. I need to clean it almost everytime after I use it (I am renting a 890 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment unit). If I do not clean it, it will blow out the dirts.
2. Sometimes, it is not very good in cleaning bare floor (not hardwood floor). I was surprised.
Consumer Report said the Eureka is the best but I found it was too heavy (Wal-mart has it) so I bought the Hoover instead. Where is the perfect vacuum cleaner ??

2. the `dust that flies out of the dust cup when you're emptying it.
The noise is certainly the LOUDEST I've ever heard on a vacuum cleaner. But, I thought, hey, that's okay if you want to be noisy...until I ventured into cleaning the stairs. There's not much of an extension between the cleaning wand/brush and the actual machine, so while I was bending over to suck up hair and debris (what have you) from the stairs' carpet, I had the crazy noise blasting "turbo"-style directly into my ear. (This was done 15 minutes ago, and my ear still hurts).
The other problem I've found with the vacuum is the point that while emptying the dust cup, I am having to actually touch dirt and dust (the entire outside of the cup is coated with it). While pouring the dirt into the trash can, a bit of dirt and dust fall onto the floor...nasty and what's the point in the dust cup if this happens? I had a Eureka Spin Brush vacuum contraption most recently (it died after 2 1/2 years) and I know from that experience that the dirt and dust should not be coating the cup, nor falling to the floor.
So, alas, my friends, I must pack up this marvel and take it back to the store. Mayhaps, I'll have luck with a vacuum cleaner that uses bags (you know, the old-fashioned kind).
