Clogs too easy - must disassemble. Melts through belts on average of two uses. You'll spend about 20 minutes of down time to bring the thing back in order. I'm considering putting a small amount heat resistant electrical tape around the driveshaft where the belt comes in contact. Hopefully that may slow down the need to change belts. ---UPDATE--- The electrical tape trick actually works, and seems to run much better, So I've upgraded the performance to 3 STARS.

Several reasons to not buy this thing. I never would have bought it, but I clean for someone and they bought it. First off, it doesn't pick stuff up very well. I have to go over and over the same spot just to get a little bit of fuzz or dog hair. Second, the carpet height adjuster doesn't have enough settings, it's either too high or too low--with the lowest not being low enough for some carpet (hence the going over and over the same spot). Next, the thing plugs-up easily. You'd think with such strong suction that the thing would never have a chance to plug-up, but at the two main "corners" hair and bits of whatever like to collect. Who knew that'd be a problem? The only good thing I can think of is the long cord. I definately don't recommend this vacuum. I'll stick with my DirtDevil.

...this is a fine vacuum and a great value. I purchased this for $80 and have had it over a year. I have never experienced any of the problems described below and the suction has performed to my satisfaction. It's a shame that the people most motivated to write reviews are those with negative comments.

I bought this vacuum after reading the reviews on this site. I wouldn't buy it again. While the vacuum will pick up dirt when the hose is attached, I spend more time reattaching the hose than actually vacuuming. The hose comes off repeatedly to the point where I finally taped it to the vacuum. As far as cleaning, I have three dogs and could probably do a better job of cleaning with a previous 20 year old vacuum. It's not worth the money and definitely not worth the aggravation in reattaching the hose repeatedly while trying to use it.

I have read all 40 reviews and agree with all of them. It is a great vacuum for cleaning, its powerful, the hush mode is a joke, the switch in the handle is easy to change when moving the unit around, sometimes the hose pops out, its messy to clean, but other than all this, it does do the job and do it well.

I thought that I would order extra parts since they are impossible to find in the store. I used the form that came with the owners manuel in the back and this may have been a mistake, I should have used the internet at hoover.com It has been almost three month now and still no parts. The check was cashed and I talked to six representatives at hoover customer service and they know nothing about my order or check that was sent somewhere in Ohio. It would appear that somewhere in hoover my parts and check were lost. They have no idea what happens when you use the address form in the manuel. Oh well...................

I didn't save a copy of the address which I believe was a P.O. box number. If anyone has this information in the back of their manuel, please post it in these reviews for me to write to please.

We used to be carpet powder users. Sprinkle sprinkly, vacuum it up. Well, when we got this vacuum, imagine our surprise when we spent 2 days sucking up all the powder our previous vacuum left behind!
No more dog, cat or people hair, no more need for carpet powders. We have had to replace the HEPA filter twice, but seeing how bad our carpets were in the first place, it was a small price to pay. Wonderful product!
