Upright Vacuums Review Absolutely hate this vacuum!
What's the point of vacuuming stuff out of the carpet, only to spew it into the air when you empty the chamber?!?! I will never, ever, ever buy a bagless vacuum ever again.
There is a fine, heavy residue in the filter chamber, even after a "tune-up." You're supposed to rotate the filter, which rubs on some fins, which is supposed to loosen this heavy, fine powder so it can be discarded. It was too hard to do while holding the cannister as far away from my body as possible, and turning my face away. I ended up wacking it on the garbage can (usually in a fit of rage). Even the absolute minimum amount of agitation to empty the chamber is accompanied by a mushroom cloud of grossness.
The vacuum is very heavy, doesn't fit under furniture, and doesn't roll well. I replaced a frayed cord (I think it gets cut by the post that turns and releases the wound up cord so you don't have to unwind the whole length) only to find it cut up again a week after I fixed it. Suction is greatly diminished if there's anything in the chamber.
There is only one thing I like about it, and that's the powered hand tool. I found it better at removing cat hair from the furniture than my plain old "upholstery" attachment. But it loses all potency if there's anything in the chamber.
I have a newly mobile baby and new flooring and have become obsessed with floor care. I bought an Oreck XL21 and love it. It's light, quiet and effective, and I can vacuum while carrying my baby. And most importantly, I don't ever have to see or smell the dirt/dust/dander EVER AGAIN.

Upright Vacuums Review Made off shore by Maytag
My model was a Hoover U6616-900 WindTunnel Self Propelled Bagless Upright

This thing was great for two months while it lasted. The first 800 sq foot of carpet looks great compared to the rest of the house. However the Hoover went up in smoke. The manual says it has an over heat cut-off, but it over heated and all I could see was smoke. I had to air the house out. Taking the machine to the only authorized repair in the area 30 miles away, they laughed when they saw me coming in with the vacuumed. The said don't tell us it over heated. Yep and the motor fried $$$$$.

I admitted that the house was extra dirty but that was no excuse. Their official stand is that the final filter was too dirty and it was my fault. I should not have relied on the heat cutoff and not let my filter get dirty. WHAT! Not let the filter get dirty. Yep if it gets dirty all warranties are off.

The dealer said any fool that would buy a Hover that is now made by Maytag off shore deserves what I got.

So much for the Warranty.

Upright Vacuums Review Best Ive ever used next to the old Kirbys
This vaccum is amazing. Its got great suction & power. It's great for people with animals becuase its weight holds it firm to the carpet unlike cheaper models that barely brush the carpet. I like it so much I'm buying one for my mom. The cord is long, the attacments are easily accessible, and they make a nice long hose when you use them all so you don't have to do alot of bending when your getting baseboards and no standing on chairs to get the ceiling. The container is easily emptied and cleaned. LOVE IT!

Upright Vacuums Review Barely working after 2 years of bi-weekly use
I've owned the sister model(6425-900) of this vac since October of 2000, but I'm a lousy housekeeper and probably only used it 10 times over the first 2 years. One of those years, it was only used on hardwood floors. However, once I bought my own place in 2002, bi-weekly vacuuming became the standard.

The good news:
1)The belts on this vacuum are still in pristine condition. So, the "cheapest" item to replace was NOT what broke on this model.
2) I got great suction the first two years.

The bad news:
1) The Self Propelled mechanism stopped working 2 months ago.
2) The bag level indicator stopped working about a year ago
3) As most reviewers pointed out, it is incredibly heavy.
4) Also, it's too big to fit under my kitchen baseboards. We recently had cream colored cabinets installed and now I've seeing marks where the green paint on the vacuum tansferred to the cabinets. Time to break out the attachments.
5) The suction power has degraded significantly. I vacuumed a 10 foot by 8 foot room tonight TWICE and then shampooed the carpet. My rug steamer picked up 3 times more pet hair than the vacuum did.

My next vacuum will be a Dyson.

Upright Vacuums Review 4 Years Still Strong
I don't know what you people are doing with your machines, but mine is still running strong. I have brought it into work to prepare for tours and clean on occasion--industrial environment--and one of the employees recorded the model number to buy one for his home this year.

I was on Amazon looking for filters and saw the poor rating of this machine and could not believe my eyes at the criticisms of it. I have never used any vacuum cleaner with the power this one has. Everything works on mine and I haven't broken a belt yet. I am thinking about changing the original belt some day.

My housekeeper uses this--their policy is to use the clients' machines--and she commented that she thought it was the best of any of she uses.

It looks like this model has been discontinued and replaced by a U64??-900. I would highly recommend this product as a reasonably-priced vacuum cleaner that I have yet to find an equal. It is loud-Consumer Reports said that. My experience has been no different than the report I read on this machine in Consumer Reports when I bought it. They were right on the money.

Upright Vacuums Review Worst designed vac I've ever used
Had mine for three years after using Consumer Reports glowing review. Constantly breaking with nagging problems. The wide belt
falls off the holding rod every few weeks.Secondary belt stretched out and no longer turned the motor. Authorized dealer did not have the part and had to return again. Getting to the replacement area is a pain that involves removing four very long screws and the bottom plate. I'ts been in the repair shop on three occasions ($59.00 just to look) Last week I had some black smoke coming from the propel motor and shut it down. I'm back in the market and just saw that this model is still available.
Runs well and does the job when its working but a bad piece of American engineering.
